Religious Trauma Therapy

With Kiel MᶜFarland, PsyD

As a transgender man who studied in a Christian institution, my advanced theological training demanded that I wrestle with religious trauma, requiring that I deeply understand both from the inside as a theologian and psychologist.

Are you questioning what you believe?

Do you feel a sense of betrayal from someone you were taught to trust?

There is usually a mix of anger, confusion, or even the fear of running into people from your former community. The values you were taught may no longer make sense, but letting go of them also feels unsettling.

I work with clients who still hold to their faith as well as those who are looking for closure by moving away from religion entirely.

I’ve been there too, and I can help.

Clients Come To Me When They’re Working Through:

  • Betrayal and anger

  • Loss of faith

  • Identity confusion

  • Fear of community

  • Shame and guilt

  • Questioning beliefs

  • Missing community

  • Feeling lost

  • Death anxiety

What Therapy With Me Is Like

We start with acknowledging what happened. Organizations that are supposed to help have betrayed trust, harming many people. Even those with good intentions can cause a lot of harm, leaving people feeling confused and lost. This pain, sadness, and even rage deserve to be taken seriously.

In our work, there’s space for your anger, your grief, your questions, and your uncertainty. Whether you want to stay in your faith, leave it, or find something new, the goal is not to push you in any direction, but to help you find what is true to you.

Modalities I Use

  • Explores how past religious experiences shaped your identity, processes pain, and works strategically to separate past feelings from the present.

  • Increases clarity in your decisions to move you toward what feels right.

  • Centers your values and experiences so you rebuild trust in yourself.

  • Examines community and cultural influences to help you understand the bigger picture of what you went through.

As we untangle what you were taught,
you’ll rebuild a sense of stability that’s your own.

I support my clients in walking whatever religious or non-religious path they believe is right for them.”

About Kiel MᶜFarland, PsyD

My therapy is designed for people working through religious trauma, identity, and spirituality, especially when those parts feel tangled or in conflict.

I trained at a Christian institution and, as a transgender man, I live at the intersection of very different worlds. I am a meeting place of opposites. As someone who has experienced religious trauma, I believe in my bones that clients with religious trauma must be approached with tender hands.

Understanding human spirituality is important to me. I am currently in a second doctorate program studying the theology found in art and culture. Additionally, I have done several years of study of alternative spiritualities including neo paganism, expanding my training beyond Christianity. This deep study of religion and spirituality helps me with all my clients, even the atheists!

While education is important to me, my sessions are accessible and understandable to wherever walks through my door. Clients have said I’m very easy to talk to, and I often hear the words “I’ve never told anyone this before…” Sessions with me are strength-focused, celebrating the good while working through life’s challenges. This work is hard but we will laugh along the way.

Outside of therapy, I have been married for 24 years and have a college-age child. I’m also a lifelong artist who enjoys creative writing, crafting, and role-playing games like DnD. Prior to working as a therapist, I helped with community theater and volunteered with anti human trafficking organizations in Thailand.

I love pets and have too many animals. I have 2 dogs and one cat, but also a black snake, and some fish. But don’t ask me how many fish because they keep having babies!

Availability: I work with clients in person in Monrovia, Calif. and via Telehealth across California.
